The Value of a Friend

10 Dec

When it comes to being thankful, sure I’m thankful for alot of things in my life but none more so than my relationships. People need people, plain and simple. Everyone needs someone to talk to, someone to love who will love them back, someone who won’t judge them and accept them for who and what they are – no disclaimers, no conditions and no take backs. I am very lucky to have so many people that do just those things and I don’t take any of them for granted because I know how quickly that could change.

This Christmas when you’re opening your gifts and saying thank you in person, over a phone call to someone who couldn’t be there this year, or writing that thank you letter (which we should all do from time to time), remember to say thank you to that person for the things that weren’t under the tree or in your stocking – their love, their friendship, their outstretched arms when you needed a hug on a bad day, their being there for you even when they’d rather be somewhere else and for their time. They could easily spend that time on something else, but the fact that someone took time out of their day and thought about you or did something for you makes everything under that tree seem not quite as important. Gifts are everywhere around you, waiting for you to open them. Slow down, take time to actually get to know people, take chances on people, forgive those who have done wrong towards you (it may not result in a friendship but it sure makes you feel better).

Just be thankful … that’s all I’m sayin.
